DON System- Blog #1

DON System
The world's technology is progressing every year with each invention doing the unthinkable. There are robots who can basically do anything but there have always been one problem robots have struggled with through all the innovations and that is vision. Previous robots have found it difficult to pick up certain objects because they do not know where to grab the object from. However, the newest robots are teaching themselves to see to the point that robots may be able to work in people’s homes and offices. Researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory stated they’ve made a key development enabling the robots to inspect never seen items and visually comprehend the objects shape and size so they can efficiently complete specific tasks. This system is known as the DON system and is more thoroughly explained and exemplified in the video below.
I believe this innovation would be extremely helpful in the business world and here is why. A company like Amazon, that has warehouses that are several football fields long, can have 5,000+ workers everyday but that would be unreasonable with the power of robots. They now have robotic machines that can organize aisles and carry loads of inventory throughout the warehouses dramatically increasing the daily speed of business. Those robots cannot pick up every item though. They do not know what a tongue of a show would be located or how to grab a pair of sunglasses the best way. The new and improved vision for the robot could speed up work for a company such as amazon. Whether it would be sorting the items out, or placing them into carts to be carried elsewhere business would increase. Robots without the improved vision could make easy mistakes like breaking a delicate object because they grabbed it the wrong way or drop it.
Another way the DON system would help a company such as Amazon is filling a worker spot. Anyone can organize clothes, books or whatever it may be so having a human sorting such objects almost seems like a waste of intelligence because that human could be doing something way more efficient for the business. So this robot could potentially take over jobs that you don’t necessarily need an Albert Einstein. As well as eliminating the busy work that an elementary school kid could be doing, the robots do not get sick, tired, need bathroom breaks and other uncontrolled human functions. The robot can work all day, 24/7 without taking a sick day, having to go to the bathroom, taking a day off and whatever other cases arise. Of course, malfunctions will happen forever and with anything but there are a lot more positives than negatives such as work being done, overnight, on holidays, or during severe weather occasions. The improved vision would make business faster, smarter, and better so I truly believe companies should invest in these upgraded robots for the sake of bettering their life and business.
